Deborah J. Tilton concentrates her legal practice on family and matrimonial law settlements and litigation. Ms. Tilton frequently represents high-net-worth individuals in the business and entertainment communities, and she has extensive experience working with forensic accountants and other financial experts in characterizing and valuing assets so she can protect each client’s financial security coming out of a divorce. Ms. Tilton has experience resolving child custody and visitation disputes, including high conflict disputes requiring custody evaluations, minors’ counsel, co-parenting counselors, and monitored visitations. She regularly handles marital dissolutions, child and spousal support and attorney fees requests, custody requests and modifications, domestic violence restraining orders, preparation and enforcement of judgments, and other post-dissolution matters,
Ms. Tilton has been specializing in family law since 2007. From 2001 to 2007, she practiced with a civil litigation firm in Beverly Hills, handling breach of contract and civil fraud actions, lender and business litigation, real estate litigation, entertainment contracts and disputes, and intellectual property registrations and transactions.
Before attending law school, Ms. Tilton enjoyed a career as an actress, singer, and screenwriter. She was a founding member of the Portland Stage Company in Portland, Maine, a member of the Mark Taper Forum’s Improvisational Theatre Project, and an actress with the Sundance Institute’s playwriting festival. She appeared in stage productions in New York and Los Angeles, in guest-starring roles on television, and in scores of national commercials. Her years of experience in the entertainment industry give her a special understanding of the impact intellectual property ownership, union benefits, residuals and royalties, compensation structures, and other issues unique to artists can have on divorce and related dissolution matters.
Ms. Tilton attended Goucher College and obtained a B.A. cum laude in English Literature from the University of New Hampshire. She received her J.D. from Loyola Law School in 2000. While in law school she interned at HBO Legal Affairs and donated her time to the school’s Low Income Tax Payer Clinic. Ms. Tilton was admitted to the State Bar of California on January 18, 2001.
Ms. Tilton is a member of the California Lawyers Association (Family Law Section), the Los Angeles County Bar Association (Family Law and Entertainment Law & Intellectual Property Sections), and the Beverly Hills Bar Association (Family Law and Entertainment Law Sections). She has also been a contributor to the California Family Law Monthly.
A union supporter, Ms. Tilton has maintained her memberships in SAG/AFTRA and Actors’ Equity Association. She is a longtime member of LACMA and MoCA and she also enjoys and supports local public radio stations KCRW and KPCC and public television station KCET.
Ms. Tilton is a native of Chicago, Illinois.
